Donate your car in Pennsylvania by Dec 31 for 2024 taxes

In Pennsylvania, the IRS counts your car donation on the date it’s picked up—not when you call. Schedule free pickup with Penn Heritage Rides now so your vehicle is collected by December 31.

In Pennsylvania, your car donation only counts for this tax year if the vehicle is physically picked up on or before December 31. The IRS treats the pickup date—not the date you call or fill out a form—as your official donation date. To protect your 2024 deduction, Penn Heritage Rides recommends you schedule your free pickup at least 3–5 business days before year-end. Our partner, Heritage for the Blind (a registered 501(c)(3), EIN 58-2164446), dispatches Monday through Saturday throughout the holiday season to help you meet the deadline.

Whether you’re in Philadelphia (Fishtown, Chestnut Hill, South Philly), the Pittsburgh area (Squirrel Hill, Robinson, Cranberry), the Lehigh Valley, Harrisburg, Erie, State College, or smaller towns across Pennsylvania, we make donating fast and local. No inspection, emissions, or repairs are needed, and non-running vehicles are welcome—tows are free. After your vehicle sells, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment, and for vehicles valued over $500, IRS Form 1098-C. The tax year of your deduction is locked in by the pickup date, not by when you receive your paperwork. Start now so your car can be picked up by December 31 and your donation can support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute donation form or call

2 minutes

Spend two minutes online or on the phone sharing your Pennsylvania location (from Allentown to Altoona), basic vehicle info, and how to reach you. Do this at least 3–5 business days before December 31 so dispatch has time to schedule your pickup before the IRS deadline.

2

Choose your pickup day and location

5 minutes

A scheduling specialist confirms your details and offers the earliest available pickup window, Monday–Saturday. You pick the address—home in Lancaster, work in King of Prussia, or a repair shop in Scranton. Ask specifically for a pickup date on or before December 31 to secure this year’s deduction.

3

Prepare your title and remove personal items

15–20 minutes

Before your tow truck arrives, clear out personal belongings and locate your Pennsylvania title. You don’t need to repair or even start the car. The driver will guide you through quickly signing over ownership so Heritage for the Blind can legally accept your donation and you can claim a deduction.

4

Vehicle is picked up – your tax year is locked

Pickup day

When the tow truck takes your vehicle on or before December 31, that date becomes your official IRS donation date. You’ll receive a towing receipt at pickup. Even if the car sells in the new year, your deduction year is the year of physical pickup—critical for year-end tax planning.

5

Receive your written acknowledgment and tax paperwork

Within weeks after sale

Heritage for the Blind arranges the sale of your vehicle. Once sold, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment by mail. If the vehicle’s deductible value is over $500, you’ll also receive IRS Form 1098-C to attach to your return when you itemize on Schedule A for your federal taxes.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup = this year’s deduction

The IRS uses the date your vehicle is actually picked up as your donation date. If your car is towed away on or before December 31, it counts for this tax year—even if it’s sold and paperwork arrives in the new year.

IRS Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

When your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind issues IRS Form 1098-C. This shows the gross sale price and must be included with your return to substantiate a deduction greater than $500.

Deduction usually equals the sale price

For most vehicle donations, the IRS limits your charitable deduction to the amount the charity actually receives from selling the car. That final sale price—reported on Form 1098-C—is typically the deductible amount you can claim.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To benefit from a car donation tax break, you must itemize deductions on your federal return using Schedule A. If you claim the standard deduction instead, you generally cannot also deduct your vehicle donation value.

30-day acknowledgment requirement

The charity generally has 30 days from the sale or significant use of your vehicle to send a written acknowledgment (and Form 1098-C if needed). This timing does not change your deduction year, which is fixed by the pickup date.

FAQ

If I schedule before December 31 but pickup is in January, which tax year is it?
For the IRS, the only date that matters is when your vehicle is actually picked up. If your car is towed on January 2, it counts for the new tax year, even if you called or completed the form in December. To claim this year’s deduction, make sure pickup happens on or before December 31.
How late in December can I contact you and still make the deadline?
Because pickup must occur by December 31, we strongly recommend starting your donation 3–5 business days before year-end. Heritage for the Blind dispatches Monday–Saturday, but slots around Christmas and New Year’s fill quickly across Pennsylvania. The earlier you call or submit the form, the better your chances of securing a December pickup.
Do you take non-running or damaged cars in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Non-running, damaged, and high-mileage vehicles are welcome, whether they’re in York, Reading, Bethlehem, or rural counties. There’s no inspection, no emissions test, and no repairs required. We arrange free towing in most areas, so you can still meet the December 31 deadline even if the car hasn’t moved in years.
When will I get my tax receipt or IRS Form 1098-C?
You’ll receive an initial towing or pickup receipt on the day your vehicle is collected. After Heritage for the Blind sells the car, they’ll mail you a written acknowledgment, and if your deductible value exceeds $500, IRS Form 1098-C. This may arrive in the new year, but your deduction year is still set by the pickup date.
Is Penn Heritage Rides working with a real charity?
Yes. Penn Heritage Rides partners with Heritage for the Blind, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446). Your donated vehicle is sold to support services for people who are blind or visually impaired. You receive a charitable donation receipt you can use when you itemize deductions on your federal tax return.
What paperwork do I need to donate my car in Pennsylvania?
In most cases, you’ll need your Pennsylvania vehicle title. If you can’t locate it, let us know when you call—we’ll explain your options based on PennDOT rules. You do not need current registration or inspection for donation. Just remove personal items and license plates according to Pennsylvania requirements before pickup.
Does free pickup really apply everywhere in Pennsylvania?
Heritage for the Blind arranges free towing for most areas statewide—from downtown Philadelphia and Pittsburgh to smaller communities like Chambersburg, Indiana, and Wilkes-Barre. In rare cases where a location is extremely remote, we’ll discuss options with you upfront before you commit, so there are no surprise costs.
